Welcome To The Sleep Disorder Resource Center

At least 40 million Americans each year suffer from chronic long-term sleep disorders, while an additional 20 million experience occasional sleeping problems, as reported by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Sleep disorders can severely hamper an individual's ability to work, drive, and perform various other social activities. Sleep disorders are also responsible for an estimated $16 billion in medical costs every year. Doctors have already identified up to 70 sleep disorders, and the number continues to grow.

This site has been created for medical directors, practicing physicians, and patients, to serve as an up-to-date resource center to provide the latest information and the various techniques in use and being developed to help improve patient outcomes for patients who suffer from sleep disorders.

Defining Sleep

Sleep can be defined as a physiological state of relative unconsciousness and inaction of the voluntary muscles, the need for which recurs periodically. Sleep is a very important process to the human body, and when people don't get the proper amounts, it can inhibit a person's ability to function normally. Click here for more information about sleep.
