Vaccines

Patients should consult their physician prior to seeking any treatment for COPD.

Illnesses, such as flu and pneumonia, can increase the severity of a patient's COPD and potentially cause complications. The two most important vaccinations patients should have are for the flu and pneumonia.

Flu Shots
The flu (influenza) can cause serious problems for people who have COPD. Flu shots can reduce risk for the flu and should be taken yearly.

Pneumococcal Vaccine
This vaccine lowers risk for pneumococcal pneumonia and its complications. People who have COPD are at higher risk for pneumonia than people who don't have COPD. Patients should consult with their physician on when to receive this vaccine.
