Co-Morbidities

There are several types of co-morbidities and systemic effects which are associated with COPD. Not to be confused as symptoms of COPD, co-morbidities are diseases or medical conditions that coexist with primary diseases, but also stands as it own specific disease. An example of this would be the relationship between COPD and osteoporosis. A person can have osteoporosis and not have COPD, but someone with COPD frequently has osteoporosis. Thus, osteoporosis is referred to as a common co-morbidity of COPD. Other co-morbidities of COPD are listed below.

  • Weight loss
  • Skeletal muscle dysfunction
  • Osteoporosis
  • Depression
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Lung cancer
